Most English speakers are not native

English as a lingua franca reshaped the grid of who speaks what.

Two out of three English speakers didn't grow up with the language. Of the world's roughly 1.5 billion English speakers in 2026, an estimated 67% are second-language speakers and just 33% are native. The language's centre of gravity has shifted to its learners.

Context

The 67% / 33% split comes from Ethnologue and British Council estimates of first-language (L1) versus second-language (L2) English. Because L2 counts depend on how fluency is measured, they are estimates rather than exact counts.

The British Council, the UK's international organisation for cultural relations, has taught English for 90 years through a network spanning countries from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe — part of the infrastructure that made English a global second language.

A majority-L2 English means the language's everyday future — its accents, vocabulary and norms — is increasingly shaped outside the traditionally native-speaking countries.
