Most of the world has never used generative AI
Each cell is the same number of people. 2,500 cells stand for 8.3 billion humans. Color is the most advanced AI use we can reasonably assign, July 2026.
71% of humanity — about 5.9 billion people — has never used generative AI. Most of the rest stop at free chatbots: only around 1% of the world pays for a subscription, and just 0.14% works with AI coding agents. The AI era, measured across everyone alive, has barely begun.

Context
DataReportal counted 6.12 billion internet users in April 2026 — 73.8% of the world — leaving 2.17 billion people with no connection at all, most of them in Southern Asia and Africa. Everyone offline falls into the never-used band by default, so for a large share of the 71% the first barrier is connectivity itself.
The momentum is real: generative AI adoption more than doubled in the 12 months to April 2026, adding 1.4 billion users, and platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude now attract a combined 2.42 billion monthly active users — almost 30% of the world's population. DataReportal cautions that these figures may not represent unique individuals.
Even among the world's 6.12 billion internet users, depth is limited: free chatbots dominate actual use, while paying for an AI subscription (~1% of humanity) or working with AI coding agents (0.14%) remains rare.
