2026-09-07 · Habitable land (ice- and desert-free)

Half the habitable land is already a farm

Ignore ice and desert. Of the land people can actually live on, grazing and crops take about half. Forest still holds a third. Cities are a rounding error on the map and a giant fact in our heads.

Half the land people can live on is already a farm. Grazing and crops cover about 44% of habitable land, forest holds 38%, and cities barely register. Agriculture's spread reduces wilderness and threatens biodiversity — and what we eat, especially meat, decides how much of the map stays wild.

Context

Most of the farm is pasture, not fields: grazing land covers 29% of habitable land, nearly double the 15% under cropland. That imbalance shows up on the plate — beef and mutton can require up to 100 times more land per gram of protein than cereals, while poultry and pork need 8–10 times less than beef.

After millennia of expansion, Our World in Data argues the world has passed 'peak agricultural land.' Global agricultural land per person is now less than half its 1961 value, and rising yields have spared land for nature — with agricultural shares declining across Europe, Central Asia and North America.

The map varies sharply by country: agriculture takes under 10% of total land area in Scandinavia but close to 80% in the UK, Uruguay, South Africa, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. In Central Asia, including Mongolia and Kazakhstan, pasture alone can reach up to 70% of national land.

Our World in Data land use, after FAO: ~44% of habitable land is agriculture (about one-third of that cropland, two-thirds grazing); forests ~38% of habitable land. Remaining packed as other. Habitable land ~104 million km². Cells rounded to 1,000.
