Context
Crippa et al. (Nature Food, 2021) estimate that the global food system accounts for about 34% of all greenhouse gas emissions — the figure behind this edition's 2021 data.
That share covers more than fields and livestock: land use change, refrigeration, and food waste all add to the total, which is why food's footprint is larger than farm emissions alone.
The remaining 66% of global emissions sits outside the food system, in energy, industry, and other sources.
