China’s peacekeeping role grew in the 21st century
Still smaller than top troop contributors.
China makes up 8% of the UN's uniformed peacekeepers in 2026 — a role built through the 21st century but still smaller than the top troop contributors. As conflicts deepen and the Secretary-General urges leaders to invest in peace, who staffs the blue helmets matters: Asia & the Pacific, Africa and the Americas carry the rest of a deployment spanning 11 missions.

Context
China's 8% share sits alongside a wider deployment concentrated in Asia & the Pacific (47.8%), Africa (25.8%) and the Americas (18.4%). Those uniformed personnel serve across 11 current missions, from MINUSCA in the Central African Republic to UNIFIL in Lebanon and UNMISS in South Sudan.
Since the first mission in 1948, more than 2 million peacekeepers from 125 countries have served under the UN flag in 71 missions. Women account for 10% of today's uniformed personnel.
UN Peacekeeping marks its 78th year in 2026 facing significant challenges in political support and resources, and Secretary-General António Guterres has urged world leaders to invest in peace as conflicts deepen. The risks are concrete: an August 2026 attack on a UNMISS patrol killed two Ethiopian peacekeepers.
