A handful of countries supply most troops

South Asia and Africa dominate troop contributions.

UN peacekeeping leans on a handful of countries: top troop contributors supply 45% of the roughly 100,000 uniformed peacekeepers deployed in 2026, with South Asia and Africa providing most of the rest. As the UN warns of strained political support and resources, who staffs the blue helmets shapes how well those missions can protect civilians.

Context

UN peacekeeping dates to 1948: since then, more than 2 million people from 125 countries have served under the blue flag across 71 missions. Today, 11 operations remain active, most of them in Africa and the Middle East — from MONUSCO in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to UNIFIL in Lebanon and UNMISS in South Sudan.

Women account for roughly 10% of uniformed personnel. Service carries real risk, too: in August 2026, an attack on a UNMISS patrol in South Sudan killed two Ethiopian peacekeepers.

The UN describes peacekeeping as one of its most effective tools for responding to conflict and helping countries move from war to lasting peace. In September 2026, Secretary-General António Guterres urged world leaders to invest in peace as violence, division and conflict exacerbate suffering worldwide.
