Malaria still kills mostly children in Africa
Bed nets and drugs worked — yet hundreds of thousands of deaths remain each year.
An estimated 600,000 people died of malaria in 2023 — and 95% of those deaths were in Africa, most of them young children. Bed nets and drugs drove decades of progress, and vaccines are now reaching children in endemic countries, yet one region still carries nearly the whole world's malaria toll.

Context
Africa bears 95% of global malaria deaths — roughly 570,000 of the estimated 600,000 lives lost in 2023. Asia & Pacific accounts for 2.6% and the Americas for 1%.
The toll falls hardest on young children. Malaria vaccines reached children in 17 endemic countries in 2024, and WHO has since prequalified the first malaria treatment designed for newborns and infants.
WHO's Global Malaria Programme coordinates the response under the Global technical strategy for malaria 2016–2030, but it flags ever-increasing financial constraints on prioritizing interventions in resource-constrained countries.
