China makes more steel than the rest combined

Industrial capacity concentrated in one country shapes emissions and trade.

China produced 54% of the world's crude steel in 2026 — more than every other country combined. Of the roughly 1.9 billion tonnes poured worldwide, more than half came out of Chinese furnaces. Steel is the backbone of construction, cars, and energy systems, so capacity this concentrated shapes emissions, prices, and trade far beyond one country's borders.

Context

The figures come from the World Steel Association's World Steel in Figures 2026, an annual statistical roundup spanning crude steel production, trade flows, and apparent steel use. worldsteel's members account for around 85% of global steel production, making it the reference source for industry data.

Outside China's band, the remaining 46% of 2026 output splits across Asia & Pacific (23.9%), Africa (12.9%), and the Americas (9.2%).

Capacity concentrated at this scale is why steel sits at the center of climate and trade policy: production decisions in one country ripple through global prices, export volumes, and emissions totals.
