China and India grow half the world's tea

Leaves are concentrated in Asia — consumption is global.

The world drinks tea everywhere but grows it in a handful of places. China accounts for 47% of global tea production and India another 23% — 70% between them — while Kenya, Sri Lanka and other producers make up the remaining 30%. A global habit rests on a strikingly concentrated supply.

Context

Figures are FAOSTAT production data for 2026, expressed as each country's slice of global tea output.

Both leading growers sit in Asia, which is why the leaves are described as concentrated there even though the drinking is global. Kenya, in East Africa, is the standout named producer in the remaining 30%.

When two countries grow seven in ten of the world's leaves, their harvests, weather and trade policies matter to tea drinkers everywhere.
