Indonesia and Malaysia make most palm oil
The oil is in snacks, soap, and biodiesel — mostly from two countries.
Snacks, soap, and biodiesel all lean on palm oil — and most of it comes from just two countries. In 2026, Indonesia produces 59% of the world's palm oil and Malaysia another 25%, leaving every other producer combined with 16%. With supply that concentrated, weather and export policy in Southeast Asia can ripple through prices for everyday products worldwide.

Context
Figures come from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service's PSD Online database, reflecting the USDA/FAO split of global palm oil production for 2026. Indonesia's 59% and Malaysia's 25% together account for 84% of the world total, with all other producers sharing the remaining 16%.
The concentration is the point: an oil that ends up in snacks, soap, and biodiesel depends overwhelmingly on two Southeast Asian neighbors. Harvest conditions and export policy in Indonesia and Malaysia therefore shape supply and prices well beyond the region.
