India holds most of the world's Hindus
Hinduism is geographically concentrated compared with global religions.
As of 2026, 92% of the world's roughly 1.2 billion Hindus — about 1.1 billion people — live in India. Few global religions are this concentrated in a single country, and the rest are spread thinly: small shares across Asia and the Pacific, Africa, and the Americas.

Context
Outside India, Hindu communities are comparatively small: 4.2% of Hindus worldwide live elsewhere in Asia and the Pacific, 2.2% in Africa, and 1.6% in the Americas. Every region beyond India combined still holds less than a tenth of the global Hindu total.
The figures draw on Pew Research Center's religion research alongside Indian census and diaspora estimates. Pew's Global Religious Futures project and its Religious Composition by Country dataset track how the world's faith populations break down country by country.
Concentration on this scale makes India the center of gravity for the global Hindu population: its census counts and diaspora estimates effectively set the worldwide picture, while communities beyond India remain small in global terms.
