Aviation is a few percent of CO₂ — highly skewed flyers

Most people did not fly this year. Frequent flyers dominate aviation emissions.

Aviation is a small slice of global CO₂ — roughly 2.5% of energy-related emissions on the IEA's rounded count — but a highly skewed one. Most people did not fly this year; frequent flyers dominate aviation emissions. That skew is the point: the sector's footprint traces to a small share of travelers, not to everyday life for most of the world.

Context

The IEA's energy-system overview puts aviation at roughly 2.5% of energy-related CO₂, a rounded figure. This grid sets that share within global fossil CO₂ emissions so the small slice is visible at a glance.

The skew inside the slice is the bigger story: most of the world's people did not board a plane this year, and a minority of frequent flyers accounts for the bulk of aviation emissions. Per-person footprints therefore differ sharply between frequent and non-flyers.

The 2.5% figure is rounded, so read it as an order-of-magnitude marker rather than a precise count; the IEA's aviation page is the primary source for this 2026 edition.

IEA aviation ~2.5% of energy CO₂, rounded.
