India holds most of the world's Hindus
Hinduism is geographically concentrated compared with global religions.
Of the world's roughly 1.2 billion Hindus, 92% live in a single country: India. Few global religions are this geographically concentrated — Hinduism's demographic story is, overwhelmingly, India's story. The remaining 8% is spread thin: 4.2% across the rest of Asia and the Pacific, 2.2% in Africa, and 1.6% in the Americas.

Context
Outside India, Hindu populations thin out fast: the rest of Asia and the Pacific holds just 4.2% of the world's Hindus, Africa 2.2%, and the Americas 1.6%. No other country comes close to India's share.
The figures draw on Pew Research Center's religious-composition research together with Indian census and diaspora estimates, compiled for this 2026 edition.
With 92% of Hindus in one country, global Hindu demographics effectively track India's — its population growth, emigration and religious makeup shape the worldwide picture more than every other country combined.
