Australia, Chile, and China dominate lithium supply
Battery metals concentrate in a few mining jurisdictions.
Three countries dominate the world's lithium supply. Australia mines 48% of global lithium, Chile 24%, and China 18% — together 90% of mine production in 2026. Every other nation combined: just 10%. With lithium central to batteries and renewable energy, the energy transition runs through a handful of mining jurisdictions.

Context
The country shares come from the U.S. Geological Survey, whose National Minerals Information Center tracks the worldwide supply, demand, and flow of lithium. Its Mineral Commodity Summaries series, published annually through 2026, is the standard reference for country-level mine production.
Concentration at this scale matters because lithium sits at the heart of rechargeable batteries and renewable-energy applications, uses USGS has documented for decades. A disruption in any one of the top three producers would ripple through battery supply chains worldwide.
The remaining 10% is where new supply could emerge: the USGS page's own featured image is Thacker Pass lithium mining in Nevada. Until more projects like it come online, the global map of lithium mining stays remarkably short.
