EVs are still a single-digit share of cars
Sales are surging — the global fleet turns over slowly.
EV sales are surging, but combustion still owns the road. In 2026, IEA Global EV Outlook estimates put battery electrics at about 2.5% of the world's roughly 1.4 billion passenger cars, with plug-in hybrids adding another 1.5% — about 4% combined, still a single-digit share of all cars. Petrol and diesel power the remaining 96%. Because cars stay in service for years, today's sales boom takes a long time to move the fleet.

Context
The gap between sales and stock is the core dynamic: even a rapid run-up in EV purchases barely moves a fleet of this size, because cars stay in service for years. The vehicles on the road today were mostly bought in earlier years, so fleet share lags the showroom.
Within the electric slice, battery electric models account for about 2.5% of the global fleet and plug-in hybrids for about 1.5%. Plug-in hybrids can revert to petrol once their battery runs low, so the headline EV figure blends two powertrains with very different fuel use.
The 96% running on petrol and diesel is where the biggest stakes sit: as long as combustion cars dominate the stock, the bulk of driving and fuel demand stays tied to oil no matter how fast new sales grow. That makes fleet share — not monthly sales records — the number to watch.
