The Amazon's fate is decided in a handful of states. Of the 500,000 hectares of primary forest Brazil lost in the most recent year of data, 78% — roughly 390,000 hectares — fell inside the Legal Amazon states, with the remaining 22% spread across other biomes and states. Hectare totals dominate the headlines; this grid shows where the loss actually lands.

Context
Figures are illustrative shares drawn from MapBiomas / INPE deforestation data. MapBiomas is a multi-institutional network of universities, NGOs and technology companies that has mapped land cover and land use annually since 1985, processing 30-metre Landsat imagery pixel by pixel with AI on Google Earth Engine; its Brazil Collection 11 launched in August 2026.
Concentration raises the stakes: MapBiomas reports that more than half of Brazil's soil organic carbon is stored in the Amazon, and that more than 2,000 Amazonian localities were highly exposed to drought during the 2024 El Niño.
The remaining 22% falls on biomes under their own pressures — MapBiomas reported the Paris Agreement's maximum temperature limit being exceeded in the Pantanal, and Cerrado secondary-vegetation loss rising about 20% since 2017.
