India holds most of the world's Hindus
Hinduism is geographically concentrated compared with global religions.
India isn't just the largest Hindu country — it holds about 92% of the world's roughly 1.2 billion Hindus. Few major religions are this geographically concentrated, so India's demographics, politics and diaspora shape Hinduism's global story, while the rest is spread thinly across Asia and the Pacific, Africa and the Americas.

Context
Outside India, the picture thins out fast: 4.2% of the world's Hindus live in the rest of Asia and the Pacific, 2.2% in Africa, and 1.6% in the Americas. The edition's figures draw on Pew Research Center's religion research together with Indian census and diaspora estimates.
Concentration also shapes how religion and conflict intersect. Pew's Social Hostilities Index counted 55 countries with high or very high levels of social hostilities involving religion in 2023, up from 45 the previous year — and India was among those with very high scores, alongside Nigeria, Israel, Syria, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
For contrast, Pew's 2026 religious diversity study found Singapore to be the world's most religiously diverse country as of 2020 and Yemen the least diverse, with the U.S. ranking first among nations with very large populations, ahead of Nigeria and Russia.
