Brazil and Vietnam grow most coffee beans

Your morning cup is a trade story — not a single origin.

Two countries grow more than half the world's coffee: Brazil 35%, Vietnam 17% in 2026. That concentration means floods in Vietnam or tariffs on Brazilian beans ripple into prices everywhere — both did over the past year. Colombia, Ethiopia and other origins grow the remaining 48% of global production.

Context

Coffee provides income for around 12.5 million farming families worldwide, according to the ICO. Production itself is highly concentrated: Brazil grows 35% of the world's beans and Vietnam another 17%.

The market feels that concentration. Severe flooding in Vietnam pushed prices upward in late 2025, and in August 2026 favourable Brazilian rainfall helped reverse a mid-month rally, with the ICO Composite Indicator Price averaging 287.29 US cents/lb.

Trade follows the beans: world coffee exports reached 12.23 million bags in July 2026, and over the twelve months to July, Robusta exports rose to 60.01 million bags while Arabica fell to 80.96 million — a shift reshaping global trade flows.
